History to the present day

Clare College is the second oldest of Cambridge's thirty-one colleges. It was founded in 1326, and generously endowed a few years later by Lady Elizabeth de Clare (Lady de Burgh), a granddaughter of King Edward I (1272-1307.

The College was founded in 1326 and was the first of the Oxford and Cambridge foundations to provide for a Master, Fellows and Scholars in a single community. It remains today a society of teachers and students brought together by a common interest in learning, teaching and research.

Food and Drinks

A full English breakfast is served for guests staying at Memorial Court in the Old Court Buttery (self-service cafeteria) each morning from 7.30-9.30am. The Buttery is a 5 minute walk from Memorial Court.

Continental breakfast is available for guests staying at Chesterton Lane from 7.30-9.30am and is served in the Castle End dining room. Please note, on days where there are few people staying at Chesterton Lane, you may be given a voucher for breakfast at a nearby cafe.

Grounds and gardens

The gardens of Clare College are some of the most admired in Cambridge and reflect a beauty and repose which belie their position, situated as they are in the middle of the city. Sited on the ancient fenland and bounded on three of its four sides by dykes and on the fourth by the River Cam, the garden stands as a fine example of a twentieth century English garden.

Unfortunately the College Gardens are closed from August 2018 until further notice.

Clean and comfortable college accommodation with ensuite facilities. Friendly and helpful Porter in the Porters Lodge who was able to help with any questions or assistance that was needed. I would definitely stay here again. Great value for money.
Mrs Katie G

What an amazing and beautiful place to stay. Room was basic but so much space; not only a bedroom and ensuite but out very own living room with comfy chairs and a view onto a gorgeous courtyard. Very quiet and relaxing and so nice to be able to see the buildings, bridge and gardens of Clare College from inside. The breakfast was as good as any five star hotel with cereals, yoghurts, fruit, full english, pancakes and danish pastries. Situated in the centre of Cambridge, five minute walk through the college and you are in teh centre. I would highly recommend Clare College as a fantastic place to stay.

We've stayed in several colleges and this is our favourite. The location is a bit quieter, 10 mins walk from the city centre, making it less noisy. And the college has a very friendly feel to it.

Friendly porters Spacious rooms: bedroom and sitting room Very clean bathroom, good shower (but no bath mat, surprisingly!) Excellent food for breakfast, delightful staff all smiling at 730am on a Sunday morning! Beautiful environment, privileged surroundings of the College, full of history, central location, all contributed to a memorable experience!
Mr Giles P

The rooms at Clare College where a little on the simple side as they are normally used for conferences and summer schools, but the building itself and the surroundings were very nice. The porters at the lodge were also very helpful. The location, being a 5 minute walk through the college gardens to the city center was also excellent. Would strongly recommend it for the experience of staying at a college.
Mr Andrew W

Wonderful magnificent experience. We stayed at both Clare and St Johns. Loved them both in differwnt ways. Clare had such a cosy feel to it. So still at night time, the magnanimous tree in the centre of memorial court lit up is lovely as a centre piece. Porters were friendly and helpful- giving an ice pack to help a terrible migraine! Very helpful. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Though beds a bit springy and awkward but the overall environment was so beautiful and just being around Cambridge as an alumni with time to relax and absorb the beauty and notice the finer details and intricacies of the architecture that seems divinely inspired was a lovely experience. Breakfast was lovely too with cooked breakfast, dairy free, vegan options also.
Ms Aaliyah S

A very serene environment with excellent rooms and facilities. I will definitely be glad to use the Clare college again whenever I am visiting Cambridge.
